Cabina

After spending 20 years living in a 5,200-square-foot loft in Downtown Los Angeles designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners (FF&P), an artist client returned to have FF&P design a new home that would provide “a completely different life experience.”

Tucked into a 10-acre hillside property in Sonoma County, California, the 500-square-foot Cabina embodies a desire to live small, in solitude, in nature.
Descending into the house from above, one enters an open plan space that accommodates the kitchen, dining and living area, and office.
In a partially separated alcove, the sleeping area shares the main room’s expansive views over the surrounding landscape. Sliding glass panels that run the length of the Cabina are often left open, allowing daily life to occur in close quarters that nonetheless feel unconstrained and integrated into the site.
Natural ventilation keeps the house cool during the hot summers. Deep eaves create shade, reduce heat gain, and create a sense of horizontality that frames the surrounding panoramic vistas. Transparent facades on all sides immerse the Cabina in nature and dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior.
