Caplin Residence

An introverted house for a sculptor and a writer, the Caplin Residence is designed around an atrium that upsets the regularity of the house and inflects the adjacent rooms.

The image of an atrium under a hull was articulated to engage a wide range of personal, contextual and natural associations, starting from the client’s memory of her childhood on a boat.
The irregularity of the home, stemmed from the atrium’s design, makes the atrium an ambiguous space, seemingly an interior room and an exterior court. The communal functions of living, cooking and eating take place in and around the atrium. Light from the glazed atrium is modulated through the wood roof structure and borrowed by adjacent areas through interior windows
The two private studios are at opposite ends of the ground floor. From the atrium, double stairs lead to a study and a guest room in the rear and master bed and bathroom in the front.
