The Jonathan and Karin Fielding Wing

In 2016, FF&P expanded The Huntington galleries, designing the Jonathan and Karin Fielding Wing to accommodate over 700 newly acquired works of American art and design.

The Fielding Wing’s all-glass lobby mirrors the Erburu loggia, creating symmetry and further emphasizing the interdependence of inside and out, art and landscape. A winding path leads from the wing’s entrance through the Shakespeare Garden to the Huntington Mansion, improving the inclusive campus narrative. At dusk, the glass loggias of the Erburu and Fielding wings casts an inviting glow.
The Becoming America exhibition from the Jonathan and Karin Fielding Collection features more than 200 works from the Fielding’s highly acclaimed collection of 18th- and early 19th-century American paintings, furniture, and related decorative art. Displays were aggregated to suggest domestic space in period colors.
A rotating collection of light sensitive quilts is featured in Becoming America, Jonathan and Karin Fielding Collection.
FF&P designed the inaugural installation of the Fielding collection to emphasize the typologies of the collection. The display of Shaker boxes made reference to the minimal art of Donald Judd and portraiture paired with domestically inspired exhibition furniture reference the domestic pieces of the collection.
The simplicity creates an expansive experience that feels much larger than the building’s footprint, while maintaining a human scale sympathetic to the collection.
